Negombo
Where Your Sri Lankan Journey Begins
Negombo is a bustling coastal town situated right next to the international airport. Known affectionately as 'Little Rome' due to its rich Portuguese Catholic heritage, it offers a fascinating mix of colonial architecture, massive fishing lagoons, and broad sandy beaches. Whether you want to recover from a long flight by the ocean or grab some world-class lagoon seafood before flying home, Negombo is the perfect tropical gateway.
The Ultimate Airport Gateway
Why face city traffic after a long flight? Negombo is situated closer to the airport than Colombo itself. You can go from the arrivals hall to a sunbed on the beach in just 20 minutes!
Must-Do Experiences
Discover the fishing heritage, wetlands, and historic canals.
1. Lellama Fish Market
Wake up early (around 6:00 AM) to witness the chaotic, vibrant energy of Sri Lanka's second-largest fish market. Watch traditional catamaran boats returning with their fresh overnight catch, and see massive tuna being traded right on the sand.
2. Hamilton Canal Boat Ride
Built by the Dutch and later fortified by the British to transport spices, this historic canal runs right through the town. Hire a small motorboat to cruise down the waterway, passing local fishing villages and tropical flora.
3. Muthurajawela Wetlands
Take an eco-boat safari through Sri Lanka’s largest saline peat bog, located just south of Negombo. It’s an incredible spot for wildlife lovers, filled with crocodiles, massive water monitors, and over a hundred species of birds.
4. Negombo Beach (Brown's Beach)
The main tourist strip. A long, wide stretch of golden sand lined with fantastic seafood restaurants, luxury resorts, and lively pubs. It’s the perfect place to fly a kite, sip a Lion beer, and watch a spectacular Indian Ocean sunset.
The Negombo Vibe
Seafood, traditional boats, and colonial churches.
World-Class Lagoon Seafood
Thanks to the massive Negombo Lagoon, the town is arguably the best place in Sri Lanka to eat seafood. Treat yourself to giant lagoon prawns, spicy devilled crab, and massive seer fish steaks at the beachfront restaurants.
Explore "Little Rome"
Because of its strong Portuguese influence, Negombo is home to massive, ornate Catholic churches. Rent a tuk-tuk to see stunning architectural masterpieces like St. Mary's Church and the St. Sebastian's Church.
Traditional Catamaran Ride
Take a sunset ride on an 'Oruwa', a traditional Sri Lankan outrigger canoe with massive, colorful square sails. It is an incredibly peaceful and authentic way to experience the coastal waters just like the local fishermen.
